Vadathillai Papahareswarar Temple Photos
Vadathillai, an obscure village, boasts of an ancient temple more than 1000 years old. The whole village has only about 10-15 houses, but is surrounded by beautiful greenery of riping paddy fields. The Sthala Purana-local history – as directed by Acharya Ramanuja, Chandragiri king Kattithevan Yadavarayan built this beautiful Shiva temple for Embar Govindan, Who brought small Banalinga of palm size when he was bathing in the Holy Ganga to this temple.

Gnayiru Pushparatheswarar Temple Pictures
Gnayiru is the birthplace of Sangili Nachiar who lived about 1,300 years ago. Since her story mentions her worship in this temple, this temple is considered to be much older than 1,300 years. The Sun god worshipped the Lord here to get rid of a curse, and hence this place has come to be named after him, the word Gnayiru in Tamil meaning the Sun.

Brihadeeswarar Temple(Periya Kovil) at Thanjavur - A world heritage site photos
Brihadeeshwarar Temple at Thanjavur is dedicated to Lord Shiva and it is build by Raja Raja Chola I in 1010 AD. As in the case of the South Indian dynasties such as the Pallavas, Cholas, Pandyas, Vijayanagara, Hoysala etc dynasties no part of the temple walls or columns are left blank but are filled with carvings of intricate and fascinating details. There are thousands of such statues in the Thanjavur Brihadeeshwarar temple. This temple is commonly called as Thanjavur Peruvudaiyar Kovil or Thanjavur Periya Kovil in Tamil. This place is recognised by UNESCO as a world heritage site.

Gangaikondacholapuram Shiva Temple - A World Heritage Monument Photos
This name "Gangaikondacholapuram" which literally means "The Chola town which holds the water of (river) Ganges" was constructed by the great Chola king Rajendra Chola 1 - the only son of the Chola king Raja Raja Chola 1. Raja Raja Chola 1 was one of the greatest Chola kings a warrior who annexed territories far and wide, a patron of arts & architecture and a philanthropist who ruled over the the mighty Chola empire during the years 985 - 1014. This temple is built by Rajendra Chola and it is similar to the Brihadeeshwara (Shiva) temple in Tanjavur constructed by his father the great Raja Raja Chola 1. This monument is a UNESCO listed monument and a must see place in Tamil Nadu.
