Back to thumbnail view

Brihadeeshwarar Temple at Thanjavur is dedicated to Lord Shiva and it is build by Raja Raja Chola I in 1010 AD. As in the case of the South Indian dynasties such as the Pallavas, Cholas, Pandyas, Vijayanagara, Hoysala etc dynasties no part of the temple walls or columns are left blank but are filled with carvings of intricate and fascinating details. There are thousands of such statues in the Thanjavur Brihadeeshwarar temple. This temple is commonly called as Thanjavur Peruvudaiyar Kovil or Thanjavur Periya Kovil in Tamil. This place is recognised by UNESCO as a world heritage site.
