Hill Stations to Visit Near Chennai

Chennai, though a coastal area, the city is generally hot and humid except few months in winter. People colloquially term the climate of Chennai as hot, hotter and hottest. With summer fast approaching and the school vacation is on the cards, those places with lesser mercury level will become most visited spots by default. This means hill stations are the only choice because these spots are generally colder due to higher altitudes amidst the green cover. Even though, there are no places that are so close to Chennai but we do have some areas which are just 4 to 5 hours of drive away from Chennai.

Let’s see some of the hill station aka summer spots that are close to Chennai for a perfect weekend trip.

  1. Yelagiri

    Yelagiri, commonly called Elagiri, is a small hill station located at an altitude of around 1410 meters in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu. The highest peak of Yelagiri hills is SwamiMalai. This hill station is around 200 kilometers away from Chennai and it is scenic and beautiful. This place is one of the well-known spot for trekking, rock climbing and paragliding. The other attraction of this hill station is the Jalagamparai falls which is around 15 meters high. The average temperature of this place is in the range of 18 to 29 degree Celsius.   2. Yercaud

    Yercaud, also called as “Jewel of South”, is located in Eastern Ghats at an altitude of 1515 meters above sea level. Yercaud is around 345 kilometers away from Chennai and it is well connected through both road and railways. This hill station is the biggest of all the hill stations discussed in this post. Apart from the scenic mountains and forests, the other major attractions of this place are boating in Yercaud lake, Killiyur falls, couple of viewpoints and the Servarayan Temple. The average temperature of this place is in the range of 13 to 29 degree Celsius. Read the post here to know more about Yercaud.

  3. Kollimalai or Kolli Hills

    Kollimalai, commonly called as Kolli Hills is located in Eastern Ghats in Namakkal District of Tamil Nadu. This small hill station is located at an altitude of around 1300 meters above sea level and it is around 355 kilometers away from Chennai. This hill station is one of the very lesser known and least visited hill stations since there are very limited tourists spots when compared to other hill stations. This hill station has 70 hair pin bends and it is very scenic and less polluted.

    The places of attraction in this hill station are, 2 water falls - Agaya Gangai and Masila Falls, Arappaleeshwar Temple, Botanical garden, 2 Viewpoints - Seekuparai View point and Koyilur View point. The Agaya Gangai water fall is around 300 foot tall and Masila Falls is around 200 foot tall. The Arappaleeshwar temple was built during Sangam period(3rd century BC to 4th century AD) and it is believed that it has a secret route (Suranga pathai in Tamil) to the Shiva temple in Rasipuram. The average temperature of this place is in the range of 15 to 34 degree Celsius.

This post only discusses the hill station that are near to Chennai for a short trip. Please note that there are other bigger hill stations around Tamil Nadu which are better than the ones discussed in this post.
