Visting Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary
Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is located at around 75 kilo meters away from south of Chennai. We can reach this bird sanctuary in approximately one and a half hour of journey from Chennai. The best time to visit is from November to February of every year when the migratory birds starts arriving here. The Sanctuary is home for many migratory birds and some local birds during the season time. There are around 30000+ birds of different varieties found during the season time. Some of the migratory birds include pintail, garganey, grey wagtail, blue-winged teal, common sandpiper, etc. Other varieties of birds here are grey heron, grey pelican, open-billed stork, painted stork, cormorants, large egret, little egrets, etc.
The Sanctuary is spread across of 74 acres of land full of water bodies and trees which attracts these birds in the season time. This Bird Sanctuary is one of the very oldest in India and it is been actively protected by the local villagers for around 250 years. The people here understood the biological advantages of these bird droppings that resulted in increase of productivity of their crops before even wild life conservation came into effect in India.
There are many Mangrove look like trees called Barringtonia tree found amidst the pond attracts these birds for building their nests. During the season time, the Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary act as a breeding ground for most of these migratory birds and it is believed that some of these birds breed twice in a season.
It is one of the best places for a one day trip if you are living in and around of Chennai. If you are planning for an entire day trip then make sure you pack your food since there are no good hotels or restaurants nearby.
